Cuddon Cycling Marlborough held their 6th race of the winter / spring series this weekend on the Hawkesbury Circuit near Renwick. A good turnout saw over 30 riders compete in the 4 grades. Racing was in a 2-stage format with all grades doing a 7.5km individual time-trial around the lower circuit. Following this road races were held over one or more laps of the complete circuit, with the finish for all grades on the top of the Barracks Rd hill-climb.
In the A-grade Ethan Batt led the field after the time-trial stage, holding back Jeremy McKenzie by 15 sec and Sean O'Neill by 26 sec. In the road race the A-grade split up half way through the 1st lap, with Batt and McKenzie initially going clear of the field. Shortly after Gerard van Antwerpen bridged across on his own. After a hard battle Sean O’Neill and Mitchell MacKenzie-Moll managed to join the leaders in the 2nd lap, but they had to pay the toll for this effort with Mol dropping off in the last lap and O’Neill fading towards the finish. Ethan Batt convincingly won the uphill sprint from Van Antwerpen, with McKenzie 3rd. This secured Batt's overall win, with McKenzie holding onto his 2nd place. O'Neill lost just enough time to see Van Antwerpen pass him for 3rd overall.
B Grade – Jason Clark had a strong time trial performance to take out stage 1 with Andrew Gifford only 3 seconds behind and Hugh Trollope at 7 seconds. In the road race Andrew Gifford attacked at the bottom of the finishing climb and caught the rest of the pack napping – taking stage 2 by 11 seconds to Hugh Trollope and Matt Wells at 25 secs. Britney Kerr from Nelson was first woman finisher. Gifford claimed overall honours from Trollope and then Clark.
C Grade – JU17 rider Andrew Bidwell slipped under the 12 minute mark to take the lead in the stage 1 TT convincingly from JU17 Greg Baunton who was 12 seconds behind and a gap to third place Merrick Thompson at 46 seconds. One of the riders expecting to be a contender for grade honours, Shaun Woods, overshot a corner and paid dearly with a near 3 minute deficit at the finish line. In the road race the junior riders attacked throughout and Andrew Bidwell went off the front solo and was later joined by Shaun Woods who bridged across the gap. These two finished 2 minutes ahead of the pack with Shaun Woods taking line honours over Bidwell by half a wheel. Bidwell convincingly took overall honours from Baunton and a consistent James Greer.
D Grade – JU17 rider Sam Spencer set the scene with a win in the time trial but hot on his heals were Marie Peart at 4 seconds and Brittany Lucas at 7 seconds. In the stage 2 road race Spencer showed his strength on the final climb to head off Peart by 12 seconds and a great finish from JU13 rider Katie Batt at 23 seconds adrift. Batt leap frogged to 3rd overall behind Spencer and Peart respectively.
This weekend the van Antwerpen Trophy event is being held on the Lower Wairau/Grovetown circuit with a handicap format on two distances – 43km and 29km. Meet at 137 Vickerman St Grovetown, for registration at 1:00PM.
