Gerard van Antwerpen took line honours in the first race of the Cuddon Summer Series held on the Awatere Valley Rd.
The graded format event meant riders had to adjust to longer distances than those posed by the recently-completed weeknight BikeFit Marlborough series.
A slight twist to the A grade saw the field riding a block handicap race with B grade competitors having a 4min advantage.
It took the A grade just 50km of the 72km distance to close the gap and the race ended with the bunch well strung-out.
Van Antwerpen took line honours from A grade rivals Luc Cowley and Sean O'Neill, while under-19 rider Thomas Westend rode well in his return to the road. He was the first B grade finisher in fourth place. Hugh Trollope and Georgia Catterick were close behind to round off the B grade placings.
The C grade tackled 44km and largely stayed intact until the return leg where under-17 rider Sam Morgan broke away a couple of times before clearing off with Glen Herkt to contest the sprint. Morgan won on the line from Herkt, with Warren Hall third.
Sophie Batt showed good strength in the D grade 29km race to take line honours from Hannah Morgan.
This weekend sees the Troubador and Squire trophies on the line at Rapaura. Registrations at 1pm at Rapaura Hall. All welcome.
