On Tuesday evening the Cuddon Cycling Marlborough club ran the second round of the BikeFit Marlborough Summer Road Series – a graded circuit race on the Dillons Point Road Circuit. A strong north westerly created a tough head/cross wind on the back straight up Swamp Road, and a brisk tail wind for the front straight down Dillons Point Road where riders were reaching speeds in excess of 50km/hr.
The A grade 42km race saw the group staying together until a late well-timed breakaway by Nick Batt netted him line honours from Gerard van Antwerpen and Sean O’Neill respectively.
Also completing 42km, the B grade mostly stuck together save for an unfortunate puncture by Jason Clark that ended his race prematurely. The work rate was very honest and there were a good number of riders which was reflected in the B grade being 30 seconds quicker than the A grade around the course. Matt Wells outsprinted junior rider Callum Caughey on the line to take the win with Glen Herkt back in third position. Michelle Gammie-Catterick took fifth position and first woman home.
C grade had the strongest numbers of the night for their 35km race. The pace was driven well by several junior riders in the bunch and a well timed solo attack by Shaun Woods left the remaining bunch in confusion for several kilometres until the tail wind section saw Woods reeled in with just 3km left to race. The bunch sprint was won convincingly by wily masters rider Warren Hall who outclassed the rest of the pack with his pace, followed in by junior riders Zac Mortimer and Niels van Antwerpen.
A smaller field in the D grade completed 28km for their race which saw Lucy Trollope taking line honours from Katie Batt and Brittany Lucas respectively. The series continues next week with a time trial from Wither Hills Winery on New Renwick Road.
