Cuddon Marlborough Cycling winter/spring series race 8 was held on the roads of Lower Wairau last Saturday. Due to many riders racing out of the district, including competing the Elite Series round in Nelson, a basic graded event was run with a combined A and B grade completing 43km and a combined C and D grade completing 36km.
Sunny, cool conditions, with a fresh north-east breeze picking up just before the start saw both bunches lose some riders early on. In the A/B grade Callum Caughey broke away on his own in the 2nd lap of the 6 lap race. Half a lap later he was joined by the other A riders Gerard and Niels van Antwerpen, and B rider Glen Herkt who used his racing insight to leap across just in time. This quartet quickly established a comfortable lead over the rest of the field. With 1 and a half lap to go the Van Antwerpen father-son combination used the side/tail wind to break away from Caughey and Herkt. Caughey managed to stay within contention for a while, but consistent pressure at the front meant he had to settle for 3rd place. Herkt held on to his lead over the other riders to finish as the 1st B-grade rider ahead of Andrew Bidwell, who broke away from the main bunch with 1km to go. Meanwhile at the front Niels van Antwerpen outsprinted his dad for line honours.
In the C/D grade the field stayed largely intact during the 5 lap (36km) race. C rider Ian Martella continued with his consistent form and outsprinted Liv Bishop and Graham Henderson to take line honours. Normally riding in the D grade, Bishop showed some good strength throughout the race, as did fellow D grade riders Marie Peart and Katie Batt who finished 6th and 7th respectively.
This Saturday 19th Sept sees the highly anticipated Geddes Memorial Cup Two-up Time Trials being staged on SH63 from Grove Mill Winery. Teams of two race together against the clock over either a 40km or 17km distance. Registration is at 1:00PM on Waihopai Valley Road adjacent to the Grove Mill Winery.
