On Tuesday evening the 3rd race in the Bikefit Summer Night Series was held by Cuddon Cycling Marlborough on the 11km long Rarangi - Tua Marina circuit. After the time trail and kermesse - points race, this was the 1st road race style race of the series.
26 riders, split up over 4 grades, turned up on the night, despite facing an increasingly cold southerly wind, which promised tough racing conditions.
The small field in the A-grade did not deter from a hard race, with riders getting dropped during the 4 lap (44km) race, mainly under pressure from an in-form Ethan Batt. The final sprint was a 2 man affair between him and Gerard van Antwerpen, with Batt convincingly winning by several bike lengths. Brent Ackroyd managed to hold on till the final straight and finished 3rd.
The ever popular B-grade again had the biggest field of 13 riders, this stayed largely intact with only a few riders being dropped. The remaining riders came to the line after 4 laps in a close bunch, with Dylan Hodson sprinting well and beating Ray Dunstan and Glen Herkt for the win.
In the C-grade race over 3 laps (33km) a couple of riders got dropped of the bunch, resulting, as in the B-grade, in a bunch sprint deciding the placings. Ian Martella held off Brittany Lucas and Peter Mann in the dash for the line.
