Twelve Marlborough cyclists participated in the Club Nationals held over 4 days last week in the Central Otago town of Alexandra. The time trial was first in the race schedule, with all racers riding on Thursday 21st April, over either 15 or 25km depending on their category. The road races were over the next 3 days, with the distances being raced over varying from 30 to 140km on a 20km undulating circuit with no major climbs. The finishes were on the airport road, after a short but steep climb up from the main road. It was expected that this would split any bunches remaining together at the end of the races, however many races ended up in group sprints, showing the quality of the riders in the fields.
Three riders managed to medal in the time trial; Katie Batt was 2nd in the Under 15 Girls, Rhonda Murphy 3rd in the Masters Women 2 , and Ray Dunstan equalled his 2015 result of 2nd in the Masters Men 5 category. Batt managed to follow this up with a bronze medal in the road race as well.
Other riders doing well and getting top 10 placings were Jess Spencer (9th TT, and 9th RR), Niels van Antwerpen (6th RR), Andrew Bidwell (8th RR), Murphy (6th RR), Dunstan (7th RR). Ethan Batt rode well in the strong Under 19 Boys field, getting fifth in the time trial and also in the road race, a confirmation of his 4th place of last year.
