Coupling experience with youth was popular in the 2-up time trial run by Cuddon Cycling Marlborough on Saturday in the 9th race of the winter / spring series. The 40km event for the Geddes Memorial Cups was run up the Wairau Valley, while the shorter 20km race was on the Waihopai Valley road.
Several teams were made up of a mix of younger and older riders. The battle for fastest time was hard fought between the teams of experienced time-trial specialist Ray Dunstan and the youthful Mitchell Mol and the father-son combination of Nick and Ethan Batt. At the turn halfway both teams were virtually even with Dunstan / Mol having a very small margin of 6 seconds over the Batts. The return leg back to Renwick into the head wind gave both teams the opportunity to show their stamina and speed. Dunstan / Mol managed to extend their lead to 39 seconds taking a nice win in 54:12, with the Batts finishing in 54:51.
The teams of Mike Murphy and Martin Fletcher and the other father-son combination of Gerard and Niels van Antwerpen were locked in a similar battle for the minor placings about 2 minutes behind the leading teams. Murphy and Fletcher also held a 6 second advantage at the turn, gaining another 10s on the return leg to end up 16 seconds ahead of the Van Antwerpen team and finishing 3rd in 58m05s. 5th home were Dylan Hodson and Graham Mitchell, realising a time of 60m29s while fighting hard to stay under the 1 hour mark.
The handicap cup was a close contest as well, with 4 teams within 32 seconds. The Murphy/Fletcher team, with a handicap of 5 min, managed to win this with a time of 53m05s,16 seconds ahead of Nick and Ethan Batt on a 1m30s handicap.
The 20km course was ridden by 6 teams of junior riders, Greg Baunton and Sam Spencer managed a fastest time of 31m19s for the win, holding back Conner Guillemot and Shaun Woods by 49seconds. Solo rider Adam Bidwell made the most of his 10m handicap to win that section of the race in 31m06s.
