Junior Racing Lower Wairau 2nd July 2016

The fourth and final Junior Winter race afternoon was held by Cuddon Cycling Marlborough last Saturday on the Lower Wairau circuit. The weather was mild, however the wind increased during the afternoon making racing tough in the later races.

The 1 lap, 7km, time trial saw senior Gerard van Antwerpen set the best time, 10m53s, on par with times set in the previous weeks of racing. His son Niels was the other rider to stay under 11minutes, with 10m58s. Andrew Bidwell was 12 seconds back in 3rd pace with 11m10s, while Callum Caughey and Greg Baunton finished in a dead heat at 11m23s. Sam Spencer and Sam Morgan had a tight tussle with Spencer coming up ahead by 2 seconds on 11m37s vs 11m39 for Morgan.

The 2nd event was turned into a team time trial for the older riders, to get some practice in for this event next week at the South Island School Championships. Two laps (14km) were ridden, with the 2 teams of 3 riders staying close during the first lap and only 6 seconds separating them. The faster team, with Spencer, Morgan and Baunton, pulled away in the 2nd lap, punching through the upcoming headwind along Swamp Road, and gaining another 20 seconds for a total time of 22m32s. The other team (Caughey, Van Antwerpen and Bidwell) stayed just inside the 23m mark with 22m59s.

The 2nd event for the younger riders was the usual handicap race, but this time over 2 laps instead of the previous 1 lap. All riders showed great improvement and handled the longer distance very well. Scratch rider Adam Bidwell, went through the field to finish ahead on his own, picking Stacey Mitchell up on the way, and outsprinting her towards the finish. Shaney Harvey came in 3rd. Caitlin Murhpy managed to stay with Mickey Luff when he caught her, Luff then sprinted to the 4th placing on the line.

The last event on the day was a scratch race, over 1 lap for both categories. The shorter distance inspired the older riders to set a furious pace, dropping 2 riders in the tail wind and continuing hard into the headwind on the other side of the circuit, where another had to let the leaders go. In the end 4 remained for the sprint towards the line, which was a close fought affair with Caughey edging out Morgan and Van Antwerpen 3rd, all within 10m of each other. Mitchell came in 4th slightly adrift.

The younger riders saw a bunch of 3 coming along the finishing straight. Adam Bidwell got the better of Mitchell, with Harvey closely behind 3rd, Luff, rode away from Murphy in the strong headwind to secure the 4th placing.

Next weekend sees many of these riders in Christchurch, riding on Ruapuna Raceway for the South Island School Championships. Locally it is the start of the Winter Series of the cycling club on Saturday, with the 1st race being held on the longer Lower Wairau circuit for the Vincent Shield (open) and the Opening Day Cup (U17 riders).
