Baxter Bowls Opposition

George Baxter gave a top performance to take victory in Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s club championships on the Seaview course at Seddon on Saturday afternoon.

The open grade 40km massed start event covered 2 laps of the demanding hilly course. The 30 strong field had the best weather on the course for many years with little wind. The start up the hill out of Seddon immediately split the field with 8 riders going clear and another bunch of 9 riders in hot pursuit. With not the usual splits due to the calm conditions 7 riders lined up for the sprint to the line with various titles up for grabs. A strong and determined sprint by Baxter saw him just hold off Cameron Karwowski with the minor placings going to Conway Taylor, David Craig, Paul Newman, Chris Heywood, and Brent Harris respectively. Baxter took out the Senior Mens title and the Mills Cup whilst other titles went to Karwowski (Junior Under 19 Men), Taylor (Veteran 35-44), and David Craig (Veteran 45-54). Amongst many good performances on the day were Rhonda Murphy (Womens title) and Steve Frost (Veteran 55+ title). The sealed handicap win and Gleeson Challenge Cup went to George Looman who had a good ride to finish in the second bunch just under 3 minutes behind the leaders. Bryan Streeter and Todd Neal finished with the same group for second and third placings respectively.

The junior under 17 20km massed start event covered 1 lap of the open course. As expected the favourites rode away quickly leaving the remainder of the field in their wake. A close sprint for line honours saw Callum Streeter prevail over Jamie Hawke and Richard Anderson to take the Jowers Cup and the Junior Under 17 Mens title. Georgia Hammond took the Junior Under 17 Womens title, being to strong in the latter stages to finish just clear of Sonia Ginders. The sealed handicap Drake Challenge Cup went to Phoebe Newsham by a large margin to Callum Streeter and Pim Greven who were second equal.
