Solid Smith Takes Whatamango 3 Stage

Consistent riding by Wayne Smith lead to victory in Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s Whatamango 3 stage event last Saturday.
The open grade 64km 3 stage event started off with a 27km massed start stage from Blenheim to Picton. The majority of the field was still together at the Elevation climb and eleven riders contested the sprint to the line. The return to the club of Irish rower Sean O’Neill saw him take the stage from Jono Lee, Brent Ackroyd, Todd Neal and Gerard van Antwerpen. Ackroyd took the sealed handicap points from Martin Fletcher and Neal. Stage two was the gruelling 10km time trial from Waikawa Bay to the top of the Whatamango hill overlooking Port Underwood. Lee was in good form to record a time of 26m 07s almost 4 minutes ahead of his nearest rival. Wayne Smith (30m 04s) and Stephen Rooney (30m 16s) took the minor placings. The sealed handicap points easily went to Denis Church from Smith with Lee and Rene de Ruiter in third equal place.
Three other riders who were unable to start the first stage rode good times on the climb. Richard Anderson is definately one to watch for the future when he scorched over the course in 23 minutes 54 seconds which was just 28 seconds outside the late David Duff’s amazing record (23m 26s) set in 1988. The other times were Jamie Hawke (25m 32s), and Jamie Kidd (28m 47s). Junior under 17 rider Ethan Roach also recorded a good 27m 14s.
The final 27km massed start stage back to Blenheim saw Lee clearly in the lead with sprint time bonuses possibly deciding the difference in the minor placings. The Elevation climb left eight riders in the front group. Lee unfortunately punctured halfway home which robbed him of a good win. The sprint for line honours went to David Craig from Smith and Neal. The sealed handicap went to Fletcher from Church and Smith.
With time bonuses not altering the result Smith took the fastest time trophy for the overall classification by 12 seconds to Rooney with another 29 seconds to Neal in third place. The overall handicap points were close with Fletcher taking the trophy on 11pts on countback from Church 11pt and Ackroyd 11pt.
The junior under 17 grade competed in a 2 stage event to Picton and return over 54km for the Redwood Fisheries Cup. The usual scratch riders were dominant in the first stage with Roach just heading off Callum Saunders in the sprint to the line. Will Hart was third just ahead of Nick Blakiston. The sealed handicap points went to Roach, saunders and Blakiston. The final stage was a replica of the open race with the lead rider Roach puncturing. Saunders was well clear of his nearest rivals to take the stage. The minor placings were taken by Hart, Leatham Landon-Lane and Blakiston. The sealed handicap was won by Landon-Lane from Blakiston and Hart.
The overall time classification went to Saunders from Hart and Blakiston. The handicap cup went to Blakiston on 9pt from Landon-Lane 8pt and saunders 8pt.
