Riders Get A Feel For Nationals Course

A strong group of Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s riders travelled to Nelson last Saturday to compete on the circuit that will be used for the NZ Club Nationals Championships in October.

A perfect day for racing, cloudless skies, calm warm conditions, and a backdrop of the snow covering the western ranges greeted 140 plus riders. Marlborough riders competed well with the most notable being junior under 19 rider Jamie Hawke who broke away with two other riders with 25km to go in the major 128km Grade 1 event. The trio managed to keep at bay the chasing bunch by just 30m with Ian Smallman (Christchurch) just heading off Hawke by half a bike length on the line. Masters 3 rider Tony Catterick pulled out a strong finish for second place in the large bunch finish in the 96km Grade 2 event . Several other Marlborough riders finished in this group. Masters 1 rider Rhonda Murphy also competed well to be first woman home in the 64km Grade 3 event.
