Lee Perseveres For Pelorus Cup Win

Junior under 19 rider Jono Lee powered through the field to take first place and fastest time honours in Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s Pelorus Cup event from Canvastown last Saturday afternoon.
The open grade 80km handicap event from Canvastown to the top of the Whangamoa and return was ridden in miserable wet conditions. The first climb over the Rai Saddle after 20km did damage to the field early on. Scratch marker Lee who lost his co-marker Chris Heywood (punctured) hauled in the 8 strong 1 minute break bunch on the climb and rode straight through them. First to turn for home was front marker Denis Church (off 31m) who was 3 minutes clear of his nearest rival mike McManaway ( off 21m). Lee was next, another 2 minutes back after riding through the remaining riders, and was in front on the Rai Saddle climb by 3 minutes. Regrouping on the final run home saw six riders in pursuit, however Lee held on for a well deserved victory by just over 2 minutes. McManaway pulled out a strong finishing sprint for second place from Sean O’Neill (off 1m) and Antony Clark (off 1m).
The junior under 17 grade covered a 35km course to Rai Valley and return with Leatham Landon-Lane (off 6m) taking the Pelorus Cup from scratch marker Will Hart.
