The structure of Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s programme has been altered for the coming winter season with the National Club Championships being changed from October to April each year.
With the change in season we only have six riders preparing for the Club Nationals in Hawkes Bay at the end of this month compared with 26 at the last event in Nelson last October. Although our club achieved the ranking of third in the country in Nelson, the small team travelling to Hawkes Bay will be looking more at individual success. The riders include Conway Taylor (current Masters 35-39 time trial champion), Jamie Kidd (current AWD road race and time trial champion), Chris Heywood (Masters 35-39 time trial silver medalist), Ray Dunstan (Masters 50-54, former time trial champion), Andrew Jamieson (Masters 35-39) and Grant Ludemann (Masters 45-49).
The club’s current road season finishes in May. After 2 months break the new winter season commences at the end of July with 40-50km events for the open grade through to the end of October. Currently the club is waiting to find out if we are successful in our application to host the inaugral team time trial Nationals to be held at Labour weekend. Securing this event would be a real boost for the club and would enhance the profile of cycling in the area and promote Marlborough.
Important events over the winter are: South Island Schools Championships, Christchurch (July), South Island Open Schools Tour, Blenheim (August), New Zealand Schools Championships, Levin (September), Club Championships (October).
A boost in the number of local riders is expected in the new winter season with the events being of a shorter nature than usual. New riders are most welcome, with all events having a handicap component to suit all levels. For information contact cyclingmarlborough.org.nz or phone 578 9921.
