Sprinter Herkt Takes Funnell Trophy

Glen Herkt produced a powerful sprint finish to take line honours in Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s Funnell Trophy event at Fairhall on Saturday afternoon.
The open grade 41km handicap event started and finished at Fairhall Hall taking in two laps of the large Hawkesbury circuit and one lap of the small Hawkesbury circuit. Over the first 20km most handicap groups remained pretty well intact with the exception of the scratch group which saw Brodie and Tony Catterick go clear on a mission to catch the 2 minute break group. At the end of the second lap the 4 minute markers had caught the 6 minute 30 second group which made a strong bunch of 12 riders. The Cattericks had also pulled in the break bunch to total nine in the chasing group. The larger bunch hit the front with 7km to go and really fired up in the last 5km to keep away from the Catterick group who were in hot pursuit. A fast
finish saw the sprinters emerge from the pack with Herkt (off 4m) taking a clear victory over Warren Hall (off 6m 30s), Larry Kendall (off 4m), Leatham Landon-Lane (off 4m) and Graham Henderson (off 6m 30s).
Just 12 seconds back Brodie Catterick headed in the next sprint to take time honours from his Father Tony Catterick. Andrew Jamieson headed the remaining scratch riders in, 1 minute 38 seconds back, to take third fastest time.
The junior under 17 grade James Brothers Trophy was won by Georgia Catterick who competed in the open event.
