Straker Powers To Victory In Pelorus Cup

Matt Straker was all power as he sprinted to victory in Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s Pelorus Cup event from Forrest Estate Winery last Saturday afternoon.
The open grade 60km handicap event covered a course from Renwick out to Havelock to the top of the Mahakipawa Hill and return. Most groups stayed together on the headwind outward journey. Six riders from the large 6 minute group broke clear on the Mahakipawa Hill. This group rode hard on the homeward leg to hit the front and were rewarded with the top placings. Straker overcame Andy Petrie in the sprint for line honours followed by Chris Ireland, Mark Hawkins, Craig Anderson and Grant Ludemann respectively. Three minutes later Mike Murphy (off 2m) just managed to hold off a large bunch led in by scratch marker Gerard van Antwerpen who took the fastest time honours from co-markers Ray Dunstan and Andrew Jamieson.
