Baxter & Caughey Take Opening Events

Just returned from overseas, George Baxter gave a lesson to his scratch co-markers by convincingly taking first place and fastest time in Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s opening day Vincent Shield event at Renwick on Saturday afternoon.
The open grade 32km group handicap event covered four laps of the Condors Bend Road, Bedford Road, SH63, Anglesea Street, Boyces Road, SH6 circuit, and drew a good field in the wet conditions. All the action happened in the final lap with scratch catching the 2min break group and then the 6min group with 5km to go. A large sprint finish was imminent with Baxter going early to easily finish clear of co-marker Callum Saunders, Glen Herkt (off 2m) and Gerard van Antwerpen.
The junior under 17 grade 16km handicap event for the Opening Day Cup was also a scrach markers day. The scratch group of Callum Caughey, Christopher Grammer, Ethan Brydon and Jack Ritchie rode well together to go through the field with Caughey taking the double honours from Grammer, Brydon and Ritchie.
