Blackiston and Catterick Take Spoils

A strong sprint by junior under 19 rider Nick Blakiston saw him take victory in Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s Funnell Trophy event at Fairhall last Saturday afternoon.
The open grade 41.3km handicap event started and finished at Fairhall Hall covering two laps of the large Hawkesbury circuit and one lap of the small Hawkesbury circuit. After one lap of the circuit the strong 4m 30s break group of Kevin Bishell, Leatham Landon-Lane, Glen Herkt and Blakiston had caught the 6m group and were forging their way through the field. The seven strong scratch group had caught over half their handicap and were looking good to go through the field again. However, a good pace over the latter stages by the break group saw them run down unlucky front runner Mel Jones (off 24m) just 800m from the line. Blakiston took line honours from Bishell, Herkt, Michelle Catterick (off 6m) and Rhonda Murphy (off 9m). Just 40 seconds back scratch marker George Baxter again impressed with a strong sprint to take fastest time honours from Gerard van Antwerpen, Brodie Catterick, Callum Saunders and Peter Crampton.
The junior under 17 grade competed in a 22km massed start event over one lap of the large Hawkesbury circuit for the James Bros. Cup. Georgia Catterick rode off the front for a convincing win and successfully retaining the trophy with Quinn Karwowski cruising in just behind in second place. Ethan Brydon produced a good effort for third place 42 seconds ahead of Thomas Westend with another 3 minutes back to Hugh Trollope who took the bunch sprint. The sealed handicap was also won by Catterick, from Brydon and Karwowski.
