Van Antwerpen Victory Unique

Gerard van Antwerpen’s unique record of four consecutive fastest times in Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s Osgood Cups event became a reality when he took first place and fastest time in the event last Saturday afternoon.
The prestigious open grade 54km handicap event from Blenheim to Picton and return saw the riders encounter strong head winds on the outward journey. The backmarkers closed in rapidly in the tough conditions with the scratch markers gathering in all the field at Koromiko, on the return journey, with the exception of Josh Scott (off 3 min). Scott held on to the Wairau Bridge where he was joined by the eight chasing riders. A strong attack by scratchman Van Antwerpen at Grovetown saw his competitors struggle with only youngsters Callum Saunders and Peter Crampton staying with him. Experience prevailed in the sprint home with van Antwerpen convincingly taking the double honours, over co-markers Saunders and Crampton. Jeremy McKenzie (scr) and Scott came in 21 seconds later for fourth and fifth placing respectively.
The junior under 17 grade competed in a 21km handicap event over 3 laps of the Lower Wairau circuit. A strong solo ride by Hugh Trollope (off 4m 15s) saw him go through the field to take victory by one minute to his nearest rival. Bryce Blackmore (off 7 min) and new rider Zach Mortimer (off 7 min) teamed well to take the minor placings respectively. Fastest time honours were taken by Callum Caughey (scr) in a close sprint with co-marker Ethan Brydon.
