Van Antwerpen For Repeat Win In Okaramio Challenge? and Top School Riders Compete At School Champs Up North

Cuddon Cycling Marlborough’s open grade riders will compete for the Okaramio Hotel Challenge Trophy from Okaramio tomorrow afternoon.
The open grade 50km handicap event covers a rolling course out to Havelock, and then over the Mahakipawa hill to almost Linkwater and return. The past winners have usually come from strong rides over the Mahakipawa climbs and then holding off the fast finishing back markers over the final 15km from Havelock to Okaramio. Scratch marker Gerard van Antwerpen wil be out to repeat last years effort of first place and fastest time. Van antwerpens main competition for time honours will come from Jeremy McKenzie, Josh Scott and Andrew Jamieson. Riders are to assemble at the Okaramio Hall at 1pm for a 1.30pm start.
The junior under 17 grade will compete in a 24km massed start/sealed handicap event twice over an out and return course on the Taylor Pass Road. Thomas Westend is favoured to take fastest time over Ethan Brydon with other competition likely to come from Callum Caughey, Zac Mortimer, Christopher Grammer, Hugh Trollope and Jack Ritchie. Riders are to assemble just beyond the Taylor Pass Road roundabout at 1pm for a 1.30pm start.
Marlborough’s top school cyclists are travelling North this weekend to compete in the National Schools Cycling Championships in Levin, Palmerston North and Fielding. The riders Leatham Landon-Lane, Peter Crampton, Brodie Catterick, Callum Saunders, Quinn Karwowski and Nick Blakiston will compete in the Sir Bernard Fergusson team time trials on Saturday. On Sunday the riders plus Georgia Catterick will compete in road events, and Monday all will ride in points races on the Manfield raceway.
