Martella Sprints to Funnell Trophy Win

A strong finishing sprint saw Ian Martella take the victory in the Funnell Trophy event at Fairhall last Saturday afternoon.
The 41 km handicap event was run in cool wet conditions. The course started and  finished at Fairhall Hall covering a route up to the top of Barracks Hill in the Omaka Valley, two laps of the top Hawkesbury circuit and returned home. Mid-race the 10 minute markers, Craig Anderson and Martella were closing in on the front markers, catching Graham Henderson (off 15m) with 16km to go and Kate Harper (off 15m) with 8km to go. These four held together in the latter stages with the scratch and break riders on their heels. A close sprint finish saw Martella head off Henderson by a bike length with Anderson and Harper a couple of seconds back in third and fourth place respectively. Just 38 seconds back Gerard van Antwerpen sprinted in his scratch co-markers Craig Harper and Andrew Bidwell to take fastest time honours.
